In the late spring of 2021, Dan Ballantine is second in line in a Reno gasoline station mini-mart when two armed men enter. One stands by the door while the other robs the clerk. When they leave, Dan pulls his Smith & Wesson, which he calls his WYATT (With You All The Time) pistol, from his right hip pocket and follows them.

After he steps through the door he calls for them to freeze. Both robbers turn and shoot at him. They miss, but Dan does not. He notices station cameras inside and out have recorded the incident, and he assumes his hat, sunglasses, and Covid mask will make his identification impossible. Adverse to publicity, Dan leaves the area.

Both young robbers were African American, and a rogue FBI agent accuses Dan of goading the robbers so he could kill them because he hates blacks.

A few weeks later Dan is warned by a state prison parolee of a recently released convict who has been hired to murder him. With the help of his friends, Sissy and Whizzer, Dan solves that problem.

Ed Logan calls Dan shortly after the condominium collapse in Surfside, Florida, killed 98 people. He has reason to believe Joshua Goldman was not killed while he and his two brothers visited their invalid mother who resided on the second floor. Dan goes to Idaho searching for Joshua who is boondocking in the forest while his wife collects a million dollars in life insurance money.
